Vitalik Buterin – The Man Behind Ethereum
- Vitalik Buterin is famous for being the creator of Ethereum
- Born in Russia in 1994, Buterin had an early introduction to the world of computer science, thanks to his father Dmitry also being a computer scientist
- After emigrating to Canada as a child, Buterin was quickly identified as a prodigy with regard to his natural competency in mathematics
In many respects, Vitalik Buterin is the ultimate computer nerd. This why when speaking about his pre-Ethereum and blockchain career, Vitalik regularly refers to robotics and World of Warcraft. However, while Vitalik Buterin might be a nerd, he is also an undisputed genius concerning modern blockchain technology.
Vitalik Buterin & Bitcoin
Discovering Bitcoin at the tender age of 17, Vitalik Buterin was captivated by the digital currency. Moreover, at a time when his adult peers were still trying to make sense of what Bitcoin was, Vitalik was already busy co-founding the world’s first ever Bitcoin magazine.
Showing signs of genius combined with an entrepreneurial mindset, Buterin was already coding for several privacy blockchain projects before enrolling at university. What is more, shortly after enrolling with the University of Waterloo, Vitalik was forced to quit due to his coding work being impossible to manage alongside his education.
The Inspiration Behind Ethereum
Dropping out of university after attending his first cryptocurrency conference in San Jose in 2013, Buterin first decided to travel for a year while he pondered the next step in his own blockchain career.
Visiting several blockchain 2.0 projects around the world, Buterin started to realize that no real innovation was following in Bitcoin’s wake. Instead, many developers seemed content to simply copy Bitcoin or create similar coins with a few extra added features. Vitalik, therefore, penned a whitepaper for a Turing complete blockchain called Ethereum. Specifically, one which could be used to run everything from simple smart contracts to full decentralized app ecosystems.
Ethereum & the DAO Debacle
Raising 31,000 Bitcoin after pitching his idea for Ethereum at Miami’s February 2014 Bitcoin conference, Buterin became the quintessential boy wonder of the cryptocurrency market. However, from then on in, things weren’t completely plain sailing.
Later in 2014, the then cryptocurrency market crash significantly diminished the value of Bitcoin being used to fund the development of Ethereum. Worse, in 2016, the infamous DAO hack occurred. This led to many Ethereum investors losing millions of dollars, followed by the just as controversial ETH and Ethereum Classic hard fork.
Vitalik Buterin & Ethereum Today
Vitalik Buterin today is still only 23-years old. Because of this, his achievements to date are nothing short of phenomenal. What Ethereum isn’t, though, is a finished product in terms of future scalability and relevancy.
Of course, Buterin is continually striving to improve on Ethereum as we know it. The only question is, what more might Buterin achieve 5, 10, or even 20-years from now?
